Floyd, VA – In April, Citizens Telephone Cooperative made available the Community Involvement Spring Art Contest sponsored by Telcom Insurance Group. Citizens invited youth ages 14 and younger to draw a picture depicting anything related to Community Involvement and send it to Telcom.
Over a dozen children and youth from Citizens' service area rose to the challenge and did their community proud. Telecom selected 3 winners from our service area! Citizens and Telecom are in the process of recognizing these winners.
“This contest is at the heart of Citizens' mission to provide quality service, excellent support and advanced technology” stated Rita Turpin, Citizens Human Resources Manager."In Citizens' eyes all the children and youth who submitted drawings are winners for caring about their community, family and friends as is evident in the time and energy they spent drawing and submitting their pictures".
The6thAnnual Spring Art Contest focused on staying involved in the community and what you do to make a difference, whether it be through Girl/Boy Scouts, church, school, helping family, friends, and neighbors. Citizens has employees who actively give back to the community and drive corporate citizenship.
Rita herself volunteers time and contributes resources to multiple needs within the NRV and Roanoke Valley communities. Rita believes everyone has talents and resources to share and encourages everyone to reach out and do something for someone else. Quoting Rita, "In doing so, we each personally gain so much more!"

Citizens Employees Concerned About Youth's Safety
Floyd, VA - Associated Citizens Employees (ACE) recently conducted a Bike Safety Rodeo at the Citizens Complex on Webbs Mill Road. The event was sponsored by the non-profit employee group who applied and was awarded a 2009 Bike Smart Virginia Bicycle Helmet/Rodeo Mini-Grant. This grant enabled the group to invite elementary school aged children (ages 5 – 13; grades K-7) to participate in “It’s Cool to be a Hard Head – Wear a Helmet” Bike Safety Rodeo.
ACE partnered with local businesses to provide five safety stations: First Aid by Floyd County Rescue Squad, Bike Inspection, Helmet Fitting, Hand Signals, Helmet Decorating and Face Painting. An obstacle course was designed and drawn by Citizens Engineering team members Bob Miller and Eddie Bower. This course gave the participants the opportunity to use their bike riding skills and hand signals taught during the educational session by Sales & Marketing Manager, Lori Worrell. Challenging and fun games were added to this year's event coordinated by Tina Osborne, Citizens Billing Specialist and Kerri Williams, Citizens Human Resources Specialist.
Each participant received a safety approved bike helmet and was properly fitted by Citizens General Manager, Greg Sapp. A bike safety inspection was conducted by Tera Hale, a member of Citizens' Customer Care Support team and Tom Swanson, Citizens' Customer Technican. Each attendee also received a first aid kit from Dirk Davis of Dirk Davis Insurance, a water bottle from David Blevins of State Farm Insurance, a Safety coloring book and crayons from Floyd County Sheriffs Department, helmet decorations were funded by the Farm Bureau Women’s Committee. Participants also received a free skate pass to Adventure World in Christiansburg and Pizza Inn gift certificate. Following the Bike Safety Event, ACE provided a hot dog lunch with a Subway Cookie for dessert.
“We appreciate everyone who attended. The newly added games were a hit with the children. Our employees worked hard to make this a fun and educational event” stated Greg Sapp, Citizens General Manager. “This was a fun event and a good opportunity to incorporate some of the youth of our community to assist. It was nice to have the assistance of Vincent Osborne, Kelsey and Lauren Sapp, and Michaela Worrell. Giving back to the community is what ACE is all about” stated Lori Worrell.
